Properties: 

Colorless to white crystals, readily deliquescent and prone to caking. Relative density ~1.915 g/cm³. Melting point 60°C, boiling point 158°C (760 mmHg). Highly soluble in water (~140 g/100ml solubility). 1% aqueous solution exhibits weak acidity (pH 4.0–4.5); insoluble in ethanol. Dehydrates to anhydrous form at 95°C; converts to acid sodium pyrophosphate between 190–204°C; forms sodium metaphosphate at 204–244°C. Highly hygroscopic – requires airtight storage with moisture protection. Humidity-sensitive; caking must be prevented.

Application: 

1. Water Treatment: Boiler water conditioner (high-pressure systems): Controls pH (optimal range 9.0–10.0) when compounded with disodium hydrogen phosphate, preventing scale and chelating heavy metal ions.Corrosion inhibitor in cooling water systems to protect metal pipelines.

2. Chemical Raw Material: Precursor for manufacturing condensed phosphates (e.g., sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium pyrophosphate).

3. Metal Processing: Electroplating buffer agent and passivation solution additive to enhance coating corrosion resistance.

4. Textiles & Construction Materials: Dyeing auxiliary and pH regulator for fabric finishing; Cement retarder to prolong construction workability time.

5. Agriculture and Other Fields: Fertilizer & soil conditioner: Supplies phosphorus nutrients, enhances crop stress resistance, and regulates soil pH.

Cosmetics: pH buffer agent (high safety profile, non-comedogenic).
