Molecular Formula: KOH Molecular Weight: 56.11
CAS No.: 1310-58-3 EINECS No.:215-181-3
UN No.:1813
Properties: KOH is white flakes, the melting point is 250–406°C, the boiling point is 1320–1324°C and density is 2.044 g/cm³ (20°C). It is highly soluble in water (107 g/100mL at 15°C), ethanol, and glycerol; slightly soluble in ether. Strongly deliquescent, exhibits strong alkalinity.
Hazards: Highly corrosive to skin, mucous membranes and metals (e.g., aluminum, zinc). Contact releases significant heat, potentially causing severe burns or hydrogen gas explosions.
Applications:
1. Chemical & Pharmaceutical Raw Material: Production of potassium permanganate (KMnO₄), potassium carbonate (K₂CO₃), potassium cyanide (KCN), etc. Pharmaceutical intermediates: Synthesis of spironolactone, progesterone, vanillin, etc.
2. Daily Chemicals & Light Industry: Manufacturing potassium soap, shampoos, cold creams, and vanishing creams. Battery electrolyte-key component in alkaline batteries.
3. Industrial Processing
Textile dyeing: Mercerization of cotton (enhancing luster), bleaching, and pH adjustment.
Electroplating and engraving: Metal surface descaling, degreasing, and etching.
Gas purification: Absorption of acidic gases (e.g., CO₂, H₂S)
Packaging, Storage & Safety: Complies with China Hazard Code 82002; marked with corrosive substance label; Class II packaging, 25kg bags.
Storage principle: "Sealed, dry, acid-avoiding, temperature-controlled" — Cool, dry environment (≤35°C, humidity ≤85%).
Protection requirements: Operate with corrosion-resistant gloves and goggles; rinse immediately with copious amounts of water for ≥15 minutes after contact.
